In India, there are mainly two types of brides: those who want to look like themselves, but better, and those who would rather use makeup to change completely. No matter which way a bride is going—we’re all for the “myself, but better” aesthetic—she will appear different from how she normally does. Your wedding is a milestone, not a common occurrence in life, so your bridal makeup should reflect your personality, match your attire (obviously), and most importantly, stay in place throughout the entire ceremony and the photos. Three makeup artists who regularly work with real brides and celebrities were enlisted to share their insights on why bridal makeup differs from weekend makeup and what you should keep in mind for your special day.
“Unfortunately, you cannot experiment with different looks and textures on your wedding day like you can on a night out or at a dinner.” It’s best to stick with a look that complements both your wedding outfit and your face. It should either be more intense than your typical makeup or a more sophisticated variation using products that provide longer wear and greater coverage. When applying makeup for a wedding, a bride should strike a delicate balance between what complements the setting and her attire and what best brings out her inherent beauty.
According to Makeovers By Sakshi, the makeup should be planned around the bride’s desired final appearance. “Most of my clients prefer to present the best versions of themselves at all the various events they are hosting, rather than dressing like a typical bride. However, the majority, if not all, prefer to appear classic for the nikah or the pheras. Tradition is crucial in this situation, and strong makeup works brilliantly as it helps tie the dupatta, maang tikka, and the neck/choker jewellery together. Trends rarely matter here because every bride has the same desire to be a timeless and traditional Indian bride. When there is a lot going on around her, a strong bridal look stands out. I haven’t worked with a bride who didn’t choose the traditional red lip for her wedding day yet.
Your bridal makeup must be extraordinarily long-lasting.
For a night out or a dinner party, your light foundation might work just fine, but your wedding makeup needs to hold up against a variety of other factors. We’re talking humidity in case you have a beach wedding or are exposed to heat from the havan at a Hindu wedding; photographs taken before and after the event with location changes; and the need to look presentable at all times because, on the wedding day, all eyes are on the bride. “For traditional weddings, makeup must remain in place for several hours without touching up. Without an artist’s supervision, your base must withstand heat, humidity, and various ceremonial activities, says Sakshi.
Your makeup should unquestionably be waterproof.
The beauty products that you know won’t even last through brunch shouldn’t be used at this time. To avoid looking tired on your wedding day, you’ll need to make sure your concealer is able to cover all those annoying dark circles and stay that way. Sakshi advises using waterproof mascara, eyeliner or kohl, and concealer to help keep your makeup in place for several hours. A good makeup artist will choose products that are suitable for your skin type, keep your wedding ceremony in mind, and ensure that the makeup lasts the entire ceremony without needing to be touched up.
Why does bridal makeup take longer to apply?
“You could pull off a subtle look for a dinner—just a clean liner and lipstick—but I will have to spend more time creating a soft, clean look for a bride,” says Pahuja. Wedding makeup takes longer because you need to buff away dry flakes, prime with a small dab of foundation, go in with a lip pencil for a base, and then apply at least two coats of colour to ensure it stays through all the smiles. Your lipstick also needs to be extremely pigmented.
